Bucketlist item needed checking

I will admit it, I go through my phases that I read medieval romance novels.  Understandably then you can’t help but wonder what it would be like to live in a Irish castle!  So, when we decided to go to Ireland what a perfect time to experience this bucketlist item.  After some research we chose the five star Dromoland Castle in Ireland.   This holiday trip was part of our fall excursion with my Mother, Sister-in-law Tina and cousin Cathy.  Kevin was our tour director, lol.

Ireland’s Dromoland Castle

Located near Clare, Ireland we flew into Shannon airport and had only 8 mile ride to the castle.  As we pulled up and exited our car, it felt surreal looking at the Irish castle.  It looks just like all their photographs on their web page, just spectacular.  Our check in was very efficient and friendly.  I personally loved hearing their accents!  Soon we were shown to our cozy and lovely rooms all with a wonderful view of lush green land that Ireland is known for.  Unfortunately, I do not have photographs of the rooms, I was not a travel blogger at the time.  But take a look on their web site for all the warm and cozy rooms Dromoland Castle have to offer.

Time to try some new things!

Where do I start…how about with some golf!  If you love to golf then the course at Dromoland Castle is for you.  This was only my second time golfing and I loved it!  The golf club provided everything we needed and off my husband and I went.  The stunning views included lakes and wildlife so it worth going golfing just for this experience.

Clay Shooting

One activity I never tried and that was clay shooting.  I have to say I was not very good, the guns are pretty powerful and being my first time I end up being a little sore in the shoulder the next day.  But, I’m glad I gave it a try, it was fun!

I can proudly say I beat my husband at archery! Maybe because I was pretty good at it, but I really liked this sport. Did I mention I can be very competitive at times?

Cart and Pony Ride

Next up was the pony and trap ride through the castle grounds.  This particular activity was for Tina, Cathy and myself.  So as we all three climbed into our cart we made sure we had our bottle of wine and glasses to sit back and enjoy.  Our driver filled us in on some of the history and mysteries that involve the castle and nearby areas.  What a fun experience, we really had a good time.

My favorite activity we tried that Dromoland Castle had to offer was the falconry.  I believe it was also my Mother’s favorite, she didn’t even flinch when the bird came swooping down to land on her arm.  They are a remarkable bird to behold.  Intelligent, fast and incredible eyesight I was in awe with these amazing creatures!  Did you know that they have been recorded to have speeds up to 200 mph? Subsequently, this makes them faster then any other animal on our planet!  Our falconry experience was a walk through the woods learning all about falcons and enjoying them landing on our arms and sending them off up into the trees.  Next, we were then brought to where they house the falcons and other birds.  Falconry for me was the highlight of my trip, I throughly enjoyed this learning experience.

Dining at the castle was a wonderful experience

The Earl of Thomond Restaurant in the castle is set in a very elegant and formal setting.  Therefore, gentlemen need to wear a jacket and no denim at all.  Their menu is filled with delicious selections.  With four of us at each meal we were able to try many selections over our 4 days at the castle.  Kevin will be writing his food blog soon to help you visualize yourself tasting this delectable cuisine.

Time for Spa

Of course I had to give their spa a try!  After all the activities I participated in I needed a massage and facial.  The spa at the castle is a very tranquil and calming space.  I was happy to see they use Elemis products that I am very familiar with and love.  This was a great way to end our stay at Dromoland Castle.

In conclusion

I don’t believe we could of asked anymore in our castle in Ireland holiday.  Dromoland Castle in Ireland was fabulous in every way; restaurants, accommodations, activities, location to airport and day tours offered.  I highly recommend this castle hotel, it lives up to it’s 5 stars and more.  Without a doubt, we will revisit one day for a little getaway!

I spent the month of July in Dublin, such a great city. Because I was there for so long I was able to tour around Ireland a little and see some amazing castles and countryside. The history behind all the castles is very interesting.

Staying in a castle is a dream come true. Love the fact that it’s more than just a residential area and they have so many outdoor activities for the guests that are unique in their own ways. Ireland has been on my list for long and although I travel to U.K. a lot, never went over. Need to change that. Thanks

That’s a really cool and unusual experience! Not only staying at the castle but all the activities that go with it. I guess it’s something we should all experience once in their life, to get out of our more ordinary lives for a couple days. The falconry seems amazing, would love to have them land on my arm. And that owl is beautiful!

I love staying in really fabulous and historic properties, and this one looks beautiful. Great bucket list idea. I really like the idea of being able to try falconry too, I’m scared but eager to try!

Sleeping in a castle has just joined my bucket list. Plus, a castle with a spa is much more than I have expected 🙂

Ahh how much I love castles and Ireland! I was in the green country few years ago and I just LOOVED IT but obviously I wasn’t able to see everything. Luckily I am going back there in February and I just googled how far away I am gonna be from Dromoland Castle! Only an hour!! I definitely gonna have to go and check it out! Seems like you had a wonderful time!

Anything with Ireland and castles and I’m in-but have to say I’ve never considered falconry at all. I love the picture of the birds though and that beautiful white owl 🙂

Dromoland Castle sure looks charming, really fairy-tale-like. 🙂 And when I’ve read that you took a cart ride while you were sipping wine and listening to the man telling you about the place… Oh, you must have felt like stepping right out of those medieval romance novels of yours, right! 🙂
    Lovely place!

Wow.. I’ve always wanted to live in a castle too! Even just for a day! 😀 .. Glad you were able to cross off this bucket list item of yours.. 🙂 The Falconry activity sounds lovely.. It’s like something I only see on TV or read on books (the heroine/hero type with a falcon for a pet. LOL). Sounds like an amazing stay!

What an amazing trip this would be. What beats castles, golf, and the spa? Great post.

  • December 24, 2017

This looks lovely! I actually live in Ireland but had no idea that you could stay in a castle, I will definitely check this out next time that my family comes to visit!

Whole of UK is filled with such gorgeous castles! We had seen quite a few castles, some in good shape and many in ruins, that at one point of time, when I planned a trip, my husband started asking, “Is there anything else there apart from castle?”!!! Lolz…

This place looks fantastic! I really want to try clay pigeon shooting, I’d probably be rubbish though! Thanks for this
